This beautiful cycle tour commences in the lively city of Melbourne and we then drive up to picture postcard town of Beechworth where we base ourselves to begin exploring the Murray to the Mountains rail trail. This trail meanders through the Ovens Valley crossing the Great Alpine Road and passes through tobacco farms, kilns, vineyards, pine plantations and visits the historic towns of Bright, Myrtleford, Everton, Rutherglen and Beechworth. We drive to the outskirts of Melbourne and ride the most picturesque of all the rail trails Warburton to Lilydale. This great 40km ride down the Yarra Valley follows the former line from the Maroondah Highway. We pass lots of historic railway sidings and bridges and the route offers scenic trail riding through bush, farms and vineyards.
We also include the ride from Wangaratta to Milawa where we taste mustard and the famous wines of Brown Brothers. Another optional drive and ride is to the cowboy town of Yackandandah and through to the fortified wine region of Rutherglen where we take on the rail trail to Corowa crossing the Murry River and returning to Rutherglen.
Where there is wine you often find good food, this is never been more true through a combination of the rail trails. They feature quiet country roads, farm gate producers, cellar doors and spectacular scenery this makes for a compelling experience. Pedalling through a culinary adventure playground makes the fruits of our labour even more delicious.
